Major and Minor Service
A minor service is standard periodic maintenance, typically performed after 20,000 km or 1 year, whichever comes first. During a minor service, 45 essential points are checked—from the bodywork and brakes to the shock absorbers and exhaust.
A major service is essentially an extension of the “minor” service with additional work. There is no fixed definition of a major service, as it varies by make, model, and type of car. For example, one manufacturer specifies that, in addition to the standard maintenance at 60,000 km, the spark plugs and air filter must also be replaced. Another manufacturer requires that the brake fluid and coolant be changed after 80,000 km.
